16 Years of Place-Based Giving

As part of the growing place-based giving movement, Step Up MCR is proud to stand alongside 26 giving schemes working to strengthen communities through local leadership, partnership and investment.

Over the last 16 years, place-based giving schemes across London, Bedford and Manchester have collectively raised £92 million and connected and supported more than 1.2 million people. The report captures the learning, relationships and community power that have made this work possible.

What resonates most for us is the report’s recognition that lasting change starts with listening to communities, building on local strengths and creating opportunities for residents to shape the future of their neighbourhoods.

The report highlights four key building blocks of effective place-based giving:

3️⃣ Strong relationships
4️⃣ Equitable flow of resources

These principles sit at the heart of our work. We see every day how bringing together residents, businesses, voluntary organisations and public sector partners can create solutions that are more sustainable, equitable and driven by local priorities.

The report reminds us that meaningful place-based change takes time, trust and commitment. But when communities have a genuine say in decisions that affect their lives, the results can be transformational for places!
